New Zealand Pet Import Requirements

The 2026 process: approved origins, arrival airports and quarantine planning.

Arrival and inspection

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Cats and dogs may be imported only from categorised countries under MPI’s current list. When arriving by air, they may enter only through Auckland or Christchurch, including animals from Australia. Origin approval alone does not settle residence or test requirements.

Selected MPI 2026 import-health-standard procedures. Category, residence, identification and test requirements must be checked in the matching veterinary checklist.

Quarantine arrangements

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Ordinary pet cats and dogs arriving from outside Australia require at least ten days in an MPI-approved quarantine facility. Its booking confirmation accompanies the import-permit application. The permit exception names Australia, Norfolk Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands; check the exact category and residence conditions.

Timing and preparation

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Where an import permit is required, apply at least 30 working days before the date it is needed. MPI notes that many airlines require the permit before a pet flight can be booked. Do not treat working days as calendar days.
